Technique

Church of Ireland -New Technique - iPhone4
Technique: The way in which the fundamentals, as of an artistic work, are handled.

As you learn new image management techniques, go back into the archives and re-process older images. While I do this on a regular basis (both big boy camera and iPhone images) the re-processing of older images is worth the time and effort, not to mention a worthwhile learning experience. Even the most subtle change, as in the image posted today, can be significant. . I would advise giving this exercise some time in your daily work-flow - even if just one image a week...

The image today was simply given a new sharpening and contrast technique I picked up over the past few weeks...subtle as mentioned but works for me....

Did I mention that an iPhone or iPad is the perfect tool  - Filterstorm works well for this type of exercise.

Marina Morning

Marina Morning, iPhone4
Sometimes simplicity is all that is necessary. I read somewhere the if it ain't grungy it is not happening...I totally disagree...so many ways to tell a story and pass on the sense of place when you clicked the shutter - or in this case tapped the screen - so many tools at our beck and call - not necessarily to be used on every image....enough said..

Ireland Boat

Boat, Kinsale, Ireland, iPhone4
This image was photographed using the iPhone4 at the Old Head Golf Course - just outside of Kinsale,. Ireland....I thought about taking out the telephone wires but at the last minute decided they helped define the composition...liked the line they created across the image...

Local image management was done in Lightroom3......I wil be covering this type of image management in my upcoming workshop in Carmel, Indiana....click here for more information.

Playing for Free

Playin' for Free, iPhone Image

'Now me I play for fortunes
And those velvet curtain calls
I've got a black limousine
And two gentlemen
Escorting me to the halls
And I play if you have the money
Or if you're a friend to me
But the one man band
By the quick lunch stand
He was playing real good, for free'....Joni Mitchell

Zion National park

Death Valley

Death Valley, Mesquite Dunes
In one of the workshops I attended over the past few years the leader had mentioned making sketches of ideas either on pieces of paper or in some sort of day book. What I realized this morning (and I may have already been aware) is that the iPhone is particularly suited for this - a virtual visual diary of ideas. For me, I get to work out ways to post process with the bonus of getting to think about new ideas for making the actual photograph in the field....whether it be big boy camera or iPhone.

Music and iPhone

Eddie Van Halen, 2004
I spent most of my working life as a tour manager for various rock bands before retiring, well there are those who say I have not really retired, in May 2008. I almost always had a camera close by during these years....

So fast forward and my good friend Ken Leslie and I get together and decide to create a gallery show to benefit his organization, 1Matters.org which is based in Toledo, Ohio. I first met Ken while on the road with John Mellencamp a few years back and greatly admired his tenacity in working to help one person at a time overcome not having a place to live. Ken went out and found a space in Toledo, 20 North Gallery, to host the show. After several discussions between myself and Ken it was decided this was the right time to pull out the archives and show some of my music images - time to rescue them from the shoe-box's they lived in for years.

Having been a child of the 60's, San Francisco, etc, my thought process is to take these images out of the standard musician on stage genre and make them a bit more like my perception of live music...music being the fabric of my life since the mid-sixties. To that end several of the images will be printed on large stretched canvas.....other will be printed on Epson 9900 and 3800 printers using archival Epson papers.

Some recent landscape and personal black and white images will also be part of this show. More on that in the coming days on my big boy camera blog, http://hsandler.blogspot.com.

Click here for more information about the Toledo show. Additionally, this work will be shown in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Renaissance Fine Art and Design Gallery.

The new image in the header is Billy Joel, circa 1985, performing in Tokyo at the Budokan.

Olloclip Lens

When I returned home from Iceland my Olloclip lens was waiting. For those not aware of this product it is a quick connect lens solution that includes a fisheye, wide-angle and macro lens on one attachment...Clink here for more information: olloclip.com.

Yesterday I gave the macro lens a test run and was not dis-appointed. I was using the lens hand-held which added some movement issues (better on a tripod but probably more cumbersome) and after a few attempts I started getting the hang of it....Need to get into the wide-angle and fisheye but on first blush I do like the macro lens....It clips on quickly but one would need to take off any external attachments such as battery chargers or skin cases.

Additionally, I was very impressed with the level of detail this lens is able to capture...

Today's image is my first attempt at macro photography with my iPhone and Olloclip..so far I like it.....

Iceland - Museum

Iceland - Museum
This image was made the first day in Iceland. It was just behind the hotel so I ran over and made a few images before the jet lag hit me....Sorry, but I do not know the name of this museum - I think it might be a children's museum  - possibly someone out there can help me with this.

Decide to keep it simple and straight ahead today.....

Iceland - Sunrise

Iceland, Reflection, Route 1
On the next to last day in Iceland we were driving up Route 1 heading to the Glacier Lagoon and kept seeing these reflections in pools on the side of the road. Finally, after realizing we were not going to make sunrise at the Glacier, we stopped and photographed on the side of Route 1 for 30 minutes or so.....This is an iPhone4 image from that morning....

I am teaching a two day comprehensive iPhone/iPad workshop in Carmel, Indiana on September 10 - 11, 2011. Along with my regular iPhone workshop, and having the more time, we will on a field trip to cpature images that can be processed back at the class. Additionally, this workshop will cover printing and all students will leave with at least one print on Epson archival paper....For registration info see the link below...

Jokulsarion Glacier - Iceland

Deep in the heart.....
Only in Iceland kids - a floating ice sculpture that looks like the state of Texas....It never fails to amaze me what shapes these floating sculptures take on.....shapes in rock formations also comes to mind...makes you wonder....could that be 'W' floating behind in a dunce cap....

Iceland - Jokulsarion Glacier

Iceland - Jokulsarion Glacier
Jokulsarion is the largest glacier lagoon/lake in Iceland. It is in the southeast between Skaftafell and the town of Hofn.

ON my first visit to this glacier last year the water was fairly still with little or no movement in the ice sculptures (i like to call them sculptures because of the  natural shapes they take on). This time the water was moving fairly quickly so the 'sculptures' occasionally collided and broke into smaller pieces. These pieces then floated out to the ocean and were washed up on the black beach (images of this in another blog). Good news is when you finish making images at the glacier the black beach is just about 500 yards away - so one can go photograph the pieces as they wash up on the shore...will be posting black beach images later int he week..

Overall Iceland is a continual visual treat whether it be farmland, waterfalls, churches, glaciers or beaches. So many images in a place the size of Kentucky.....
