Portraits are fun using the Hipstamatic Camera application. I tend to use one film and lens combo with Hipsta - JohnS and KodotGrizzled. I like the way they render the skin tone, and, specifically like the the look if the image in a flat front light. For me that is just the beginning....I usually play with softness, structure and color trying to make the eyes draw the viewer into the image. This can be accomplished using Snapseed, Filterstorm and blender....

Hipstamatic Portraits

My main use for the Hipstamatic Camera is for portrait and still life work. I use only one lens and one film type most of the time - JohnS and Kodot Grizzled.. I like the edges and resolution so I stick to it. Of course I do experiment from time to time but usually go back to that combination.

I was invited on to a new Facebook Page all about iPhone Portraits hence today's posts. Over the past few years I have come up with quick combinations for shooting portraits, both quick street images and, of course, self portraits...most of the time I use the Hipstamatic Camera, Johns Lens and Kodot Grizzled film. If time permits I might use either ProCamera or Camera+ to take advantage of being able to throw the background out of focus.

This particular image was made using the IP internal camera...I played around in Filterstorm, NIK Snapseed, MacPhun PhotoStudio and Photo FX and came up with this workflow....My evil twin? Self-Portraits can be fun....

It has been awhile since I have used NIK's Silver EFX Pro 2. Recently I have been processing some of my iPhone4s Hipstamatic images with SFX2 achieving results that I am quite happy with....NIK has made several upgrades and these new features give the user a bit more control over the image...

Today's image fromt he beach in Ireland looking out at the Dingle Peninsula....Hipstamatic - JohnS lens with Kodot Grizzled film...As you can tell yet another windy, rainy afternoon....but it certainly does add some character....

Two Irish Friends

I was sitting in the car at Tuliag Bay, County Donegal waiting for sunset thinking it might be a good one...Out of the corner of my eye I notice a car pull up and two women get out.....Not paying attention I am startled by a tap on the window....of course it is the two women asking if I would take a photo of them with the bay in the background.....of course I say yes with one caveat - i can take their photo also...we agree - i take photos with both of their cameras and then get to shoot a few hipstamatic images with my iPhone...

Long story short they were childhood friends and used to swim in that very bay..currently they are 67 and 71.....back for another childhood memory...and me, I am happy to have been part of it.......

PS: the sunset never happened but the portrait did.....the universe responded....

The JOyce's, Partry Mountain, Ireland

The Joyce's

So there we are driving down this one lane road up on Partry Mountain looking for an images.....Spot this couple walking their dog coming down the road and needless to say have to stop to let them by.....Mr Joyce looks in the window and says 'Surely you must be lost' - I say 'Yes, but on purpose'.....He tells me I might not make more then one more mile as the road is closed..... We chat for awhile and I ask to take their photo.....this is the iPhone version - I also did a big boy camera image to process later (this one has the dog in the photo).....In the end we take their address to send a print and move on down the road.

As we drive away it suddenly dawns on us that this is 'Joyce Country' as in James Joyce.....Make you wonder....will ask when I send the prints over....those are two fabulous faces....

Caddo Lake - Sunrise

Today's image is a re-doux of an image made last April at Caddo Lake. I try and make at least one trip per year to this location - Uncertain, Texas. Quite the mysterious location......when one is out on the boat it feels timeless and very eerie....

Indianapolis Car Show

There are quite a few iPhone applications now available on our laptop and desktop computers....Lately I have been processing on my 'macbook' playing using a few of these applications.
Today's image was created by using the application pixel blender and then blending this image back into the original using layers and blending modes in CS5......I am traveling and really tired and will post a tutorial in the next few days showing how this is accomplished...

For now I had fun with an image photographed at the car show Sunday morning at the Indianapolis Raceway.......there must have been 500 cars or more....I posted a few big boy images from this show on the http://hsandler.blogspot.com this morning........stay tuned for more...

Finally getting home today after two weeks on the road....

I fell in love with the the Dodge truck below....Difficult to isolate a vehicle at a show but the owner was kind enough to pull the vehicle out a bit for this iPhone HDR image....this would be a great truck to photograph from.....

Iceland - Jokulsarion Glacier

Iceland - Jokulsarion Glacier

Jokulsarion is the largest glacier lagoon/lake in Iceland. It is in the southeast between Skaftafell and the town of Hofn.

ON my first visit to this glacier last year the water was fairly still with little or no movement in the ice sculptures (i like to call them sculptures because of the  natural shapes they take on). This time the water was moving fairly quickly so the 'sculptures' occasionally collided and broke into smaller pieces. These pieces then floated out to the ocean and were washed up on the black beach (images of this in another blog). Good news is when you finish making images at the glacier the black beach is just about 500 yards away - so one can go photograph the pieces as they wash up on the shore...will be posting black beach images later int he week..

Overall Iceland is a continual visual treat whether it be farmland, waterfalls, churches, glaciers or beaches. So many images in a place the size of Kentucky.....

I really enjoy the way Hipstamatic renders the colors of Paris - and most other places I might add...raw and saturated.......It was the figurines int he widnow that won me over. Wallah.....

The clouds over here in Europe have been spectacular lately. As I have been spending a good deal of time flying about I will post a few of what I am calling Cloud Constructions. Some will have a good deal of image management and others will be straight up.
