Drove back home from Toledo today...Actually left Saturday and stopped in Erie, PA where I stayed at the fabulous Holiday Inn Express - got the last room - remind me not to travel on Saturday night next time.Woke up very early Sunday and out the door by 6:30AM - drove route 6 from Erie to New York State looking for color....seemed like I was maybe a week early but did manage to find a few images to make, both with my iPhone and big boy camera.......The big boy image of this barn will be posted on http://HSandler.blogspot.com later today....

Toledo was a great time as always - got to re-unite with the Donuts and and the Donut ho's......a way inside joke. Eric Hillenbrand and Condessa Croninger were fabulous hosts at 20 North Gallery - and we surpassed last year in money raised at the opening.

But the best time was spent at The Toledo School for the Arts and St. Ursula's Academy. I was able to speak with art students from 8th grade through high school - and was totally impressed with these artists and the work they were doing. Who knew Toledo was so rich in the arts....never entered MY mind.  Definitely a must to re-visit next time through Toledo.

 'If you want to learn something the best way is to teach it'

I have only been teaching for a short time am enjoying putting myself in a position of teaching someone how else how to do something.  And one of the side benefits is in preparation for a workshop there are always many many aha moments...It is similar to the study group things we all did as children.....learning and applying what we learn. This is why I like the workshop atmosphere......always getting back a bit more from the folks in attendance.....push the envelope - keep pushing - keep learning...........

iPhone HDR

iPhone Tip 101:

In the workshop last weekend we talked about differences between ProHDR and TrueHDR. On Sunday morning I made these photographs with the iPhone on a tripod. The True HDR is a bit more saturdated which gives the iamge more contrast. The Pro HDR is more neutral then Pro which makes it a bit softer. Saturation increases contrast and contrast increases saturation. Something to think about when shooting and then making adjustments in your images. The True HDR was set ot the enhanced mode to emphasize the saturation and contrast.

Working on several iPhone impressions of Death Valley and other locations...these iPhone images work well as color-scape impressions when printed small on the right substrate....my intent would be to hae several of these impressions in my upcoming show at the Renaissance Fine Art and Design Gallery in Carmel, Indiana. .

All I can remember about this image was trying to keep my balance as the drop was maybe 150 feet and I was set-up very close to the edge....The coastline of Ireland is a great photo opp at every turn....I guess I could say that about all of Ireland.....

This image was made the first day in Iceland. It was just behind the hotel so I ran over and made a few images before the jet lag hit me....Sorry, but I do not know the name of this museum - I think it might be a children's museum  - possibly someone out there can help me with this.

On the next to last day in Iceland we were driving up Route 1 heading to the Glacier Lagoon and kept seeing these reflections in pools on the side of the road. Finally, after realizing we were not going to make sunrise at the Glacier, we stopped and photographed on the side of Route 1 for 30 minutes or so.....This is an iPhone4 image from that morning....

I am teaching a two day comprehensive iPhone/iPad workshop in Carmel, Indiana on September 10 - 11, 2011. Along with my regular iPhone workshop, and having the more time, we will on a field trip to cpature images that can be processed back at the class. Additionally, this workshop will cover printing and all students will leave with at least one print on Epson archival paper....For registration info see the link below...

Iceland - Day 1

ON the Road to Budir

Finally got away from Reykjavik yesterday and drove to the town of Budir in the northwest corner of Iceland...All I can say is wow....total overcast and fog the entire way - my favorite light.....moutain peaks cover in fog - saturated colors....photographers dream....The only drawback was a bit cold and windy....but simply does not matter....Woke up this morning and got out around 530AM....did I mention the sunrise is at 4AM and the sun set around midnight...basically it never really gets dark - there is always a soft glow in the northern sky....

Traveling with Einar Erlendsson fromborgarfjordur moiuntain - West Icelandhttp://www.focusonnature.is/ makes everything really simple to deal with...Einar runs workshops every summer in Iceland with various professional instructors. Last Saturday I gave a one day seminar on the iPhone in Reykjavik and will be going back next year for another....

Backyard of Hotel Budir

Claremont Hotel

This one is from one year ago. I was in Oakland, California staying at the Claremont Hotel and Resort in Berkeley, California. The Claremont was built circa 1917 and is a fabulous old place, albeit in need of a renovation.

At any rate there are fabulous views of San Francisco on one side while the other side gives one a look at the architecture of the hotel.  As per my usual I photograph out of my hotel room window at sunrise and caught the image posted today. Of course I applied a bit of iPad image management as per below:

Wow, I did not post yesterday and the world did not come to an end....I think I was in mourning as the New York Knicks lost Donnie Walsh, only the best executive they have had in years....my sports side is coming out now....the Knicks have one winning season and the guy responsible is gone....Hopefully they are not bringing back Isiah Thomas.....ok enough ranting.

My good friend Teri Lou Dantzler must have been in my head this morning - TL aka smudgie, is always espousing the idea of simply playing on the iPhone/iPad and that is exactly what I did this morning - looks like I have come up with a new direction for my iPhone/iPad work....Constructions.....

The intuitive brushing/opacity available in Filterstorm (my current favorite) allows a good deal of latitude when combining images. Iris is another that I use quite regularly but Filterstorm seems to have a bit more overall control of the image.

Today's image is from Central State Asylum in Indianapolis. Photographed with my iPhone4 using truehdr (tripod). Application used for image management are:

Bicycle - Central State Hospital

 After my Apple Store presentation on Saturday a friend got us into Central State Hospital for the Insane. The hospital was first built in 1848 and was abandoned in 1994.

The first building we walk into has this plastic children's bicycle right in the doorway - I am thinking if this is the only image I make today the trip was worth the price of admission. Oh, did i tell you about my attraction to bicycles....seems like they keep appearing at the strangest places and times....might have to do a show just on abandoned bicycles and what they mean to me...

By the way the Apple Store presentation went very well. The folks working there could not have been any more helpful. Used my iPad23 hooked to a large Apple Monitor and that was a bit easier then the old set-up of camera over iPhone system. The only drawback, if a drawback at all, is that you can not see the stylus making the move on the screen. Other then that the iPad2 is a game changer. One cable to the screen and you are in up and running...
