The original was a Noir image - very much blue-black (pre-sharpened in Photoforge)
both were blended in Iris
the horses were painted back from the Paintmee Original

Iceland Farm

I am still playing with the new Iris and finding more and more to like about it everyday.

This image today is a redoux from a trip to Iceland last summer. Mostly used various applications to create textures and then blend them in Iris - not to mention creating a few textures in Iris. I used Photostudio Pencil Paint 2, Sketchmee and Photoforge on this image. Finished it off with Filterstorm and painted in various parts of several images to create the final look.

Filterstorm and Iris are a very powerful team when used in tandem.

Images originally was captured in ProHDR - hand held.

PS: I left the image slightly askew - not sure why - it just felt correct.

Off to New Orleans tomorrow for two days of shooting at the Jazz Festival...

Iris and Cape Cod

So I continue to play with the new Iris Photo Suite for iPad.

First I did a smudge (using the smudge tool in Photoforge) on the original image.  Next I loaded the smudged image into Iris and put a grunge texture on top of the smudge before making that the base layer to blend with another image.

Went back and loaded the original image and blended both together using the opacity brush to blend back in a bit more of the original color in the water. Finished it off with a frame and sharpened both the boat and object off to the right which was a docking buoy.

Fonthill - Redoux in Iris Photo Suite

This Fonthill image has been redone using the just released Iris Photo Suite application for iPad users. And for sure I was not dis-appointed at all.

At first the interface is complicated as they have moved icons from where they lived on the older version. But once you find everything it becomes quite simple to navigate the app.  Iris has added several new processing tools in the FX, Auto-adjust and Adjustments dialog box at the top of the screen. And finally we have brush size and opacity to paint in and mask out areas with more control - this is huge. Be sure to check out the filters at the bottom of the screen as they have added some new twists.

Couple of excellent much needed improvements are the file save directly to your camera roll and quickly I might add. Additionally when choosing an image the folder pops up on-screen for easy navigation and selection.

All this is after using it once this morning - will get more time to play over the next few days and see what else I can learn. If I have any complaint it would be making the image size adjustment a bit more clear. Possibly the go button in the dialog box along with the cancel icon...then it would seem to follow in order...but this is a very small nitpick compared to the rest...

In the meantime have some fun out there.

Here is another image from Twilight Ridge - this time an iPhone4 capture using the Bracket Mode application. Added a vintage Polaroid Type 55 frame from lo-mob....

Lately I have been enjoying the way iPhone technology can create pictorial imagery similar to artists like Henry Peach Robinson, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Edward Steichen and Alfred Steiglitz to name a few. Among the methods they used were combining multiple negatives, soft focus, special filters, various lens choices and brushes to soften images and on and on. With the iPhone technology we use multiple applications and textures not so much different then these pioneers to create the same feel - something I enjoy coming from an alternative process background. Additionally, iPhone artists use brushes, play with various lens choices, textures and blending to create images. Not so different when you think about it.

I guess my point here is that this new iPhone technology in the right hands is not so different from what those photography pioneers did back at the turn of the 20th century. In some ways
iphone-ographers are going through the same criticisms about whether this technology is truly photography - my opinion is of course yes.

 If you have time take a look at he various website for these artists - you will not be dis-appointed.

It was raining on Sunday when I photographed this structure - need to go back this week with some better light....also need to get inside... did a good bit of post processing playing around with textures - always something new to learn...

Bastion Falls

I was up in the Hudson River Valley over the weekend staying with friends in Palenville, New York. The weather was atmospheric with a low fog hanging over the valley just after a hard rain. As we were driving to dinner on Saturday night we passed Bastion Falls and simply could not resist the light - a perfect storm so to speak.

Having always been drawn to the Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen images I used the iPhone4 to recreate an image with an alternative process feel - something the iPhone does very well.

This was quite a memorable day as my good friends Dougie and Tina from Glasgow had traveled to the hotel the night before and surprised me in the bar...And of course 'Dougie from Glasgow' has access to almost anything you need anywhere in the world...

Cotswald Topiary

When I first captured this image I had no idea what to do with it - it seemed like one of those images you capture and then never seem to do anything with. Possibly in a month or two I might discover something that I think works with an image like this but mostly likely it gets lost in the myriad of images on my computer and never sees the light of day.

Long story short I started playing with FX Photo Studio's Pencil Paint presets, then added that to the new upgrade for Dynamic Light. Something started to feel right about this image so I stuck with it and added a few new moves to my workflows - something that will pay off later on in spades.
