Sun Studio - Memphis

Sun Studio - Memphis, TN
This is the guitar that hangs outside of Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. I was working on a project several yearsa ago and made this image using a 'lens baby" on my Canon, and, recently processed same on my iPad2.

Sun was opened by Sam Phillips in January 1950. Those who have recorded at Sun are Howling Wolf, Little Milton, BB King, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis to name just a few.

I can not remember most of the apps used for this image. I do know that Photo Studio was in the mix...

Ireland, Blue Door

Blue Door - PaintMee
The original image was made using a medium format digital back. It was then processed in the iPad which resulted in the image below. I re-processed this morning using the PaintMee application on the MacBook. Local image management was done in Filterstorm.

Vintage Car

A few weeks ago leaving Toledo I came across several vintage cars simply parked on the side of the road. The vehicles took on a extremely mysterious look in the dew filled misty-rainy morning....So of course I stopped and made a few iPhone4 exposures using ProHDR on a tripod....

This one was processed using Photo Toaster and Blur Fx, two new applications for me. Photo toaster retains resolution while Blur Fx is a res killer. In order to retain some degree of resolution I combined the blurred image with the Photo Toaster image in Iris and was able to maintain 3.3 MP of the original 5 MP. I do, however, realizze there are other ways to get this effect but wanted to play a bit with Blur Fx....

Never noticed a preferences page in Blur - anyone know if high resolution is even possible in this application.

Photo toaster is  a fun applications - even has frames...will be added to the list of applications for the Whidbey Island workshop...

PS: Anyone know what type of car this is...other then 'way cool'.....

More iPhone 4s

iPhone 4s - True HDR - no tripod
Still playing with the images from last Sunday...checking out the resolution of this new device and operating system...Image above made with True HDR resting on a ledge - I did a standard input sharpen on the image - standard for me that is...The Empire State Building is approx. 4 miles away...very impressive considering the 8MP camera.....
Image at 100%

Below is the screen capture from Lightroom3...Note the ISO, Shutter Speed and 4.28MM Lens...

PS: Personally while I like a certain degree of resolution, I also like the camera's ability to render in a more expressionist way - just the I like to see both ends of the spectrum - like pushing sliders all the way to the left and then to the right before making decisions....

Ireland - Ring of Kerry

Ireland iPhone4
As mentioned in my other blog, http://hsandler.blogspot.com, this morning I am completely bogged down trying to get out of NY for a month of travel. Going to points west including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Whidbey Island for a workshop and finally Denver.

As I just got my new iPhone 4s this will be an interesting trip doing the test drive...looking forward to seeing old friends and making some power stitches with the new high res camera......

I can not remember very much about today's image other then it was in Ireland on the Ring of Kerry....most likely a pro-hdr image.....I processed in Filterstorm and blender this morning on the iPad2.....

stay tuned to this space for some travel images.......what fun...

iPhone 4s

Panoramic - Lower Manhatan - from Brooklyn
Yesterday was one of those special fall days in New York City, clear blue skies, a few clouds - perfect weather for an iPhone 4s test run. Luck was with me as I was visiting family in Brooklyn who live in a very tall building with a fantastic view of Manhattan.

After some coffee and a croissant I went up on the roof and made a 5 vertical image pano using the TrueHDR camera application. Long story short I only used the darker image for the final pano....the wind was blowing which made it difficult for them to resolve without blur. What was I thinking - you can't hand hold TrueHDR - so many other choices but....

Check out the image size above - yes I left the boxes checked again but there was no resample. This is the native size out of the iPhone after changing to 240DPI and the ProPhoto color space. Pretty neat......new sheriff in town...

There are many many new detail with this iPhone4s.....most people are talking about the iCloud but for me, thus far, it is being able to speak into the phone to text and send emails....oh, and yes, the camera rocks...

Below are details from this image - first one at 100% and the second at 200%..

iPhone 4s Detail

Not much time the last few days as the house is in renovation mode.....I did receive my iPhone 4S on Friday and have yet to make an image.....but I did manage to check out the native size of the image (shot with the iPhone camera in HDR mode) in photoshop and thought I should put same on today's blog...Just a simple image of my living room but check out the size below....WAHOO

This is not a re-sampled image - I simply forgot to un-check those boxes....

Leaving for points west in a few days where I am sure the new iPhone will get a heavy workout.....I will be on the road for one month....Vegas, Whidbey Island and Denver....

Toledo, 1Matters and the iPhone

New iPhone Friends
The Music, iPhone and Other Neighborhoods show in Toledo went very well. Sold 8 pieces at the opening to benefit  1Matters.org, a charity that works to find housing for those, for whatever reasons, are not able to house themselves. From my personal experience last weekend I learned that our stereotype of the un-housed is not really correct...I was totally moved the dedication of the volunteers that work with 1Matters....folks who give of themselves and their time every day to make someone else feel comfortable - my hat is off to them - there are too many to mention here....

In addition to the gallery show, we created a silent auction that runs through October 30 to raise money for 1Matters. The images are in the photo below - note the Mellencamp photo is a canvas print signed by John, and, the Billy Joel (traditional print) is also signed. There is also a canvas print of Leonard Cohen from The Beacon Theater and a more traditional print of Mountain (Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi) from Dec 1974 at the Felt Forum in New York City (now the theater at Madison Square Garden). These images can be viewed by clicking here...

The Birdyboo bag below is also part of the silent auction - it was donated by Kathleen Stevens who runs the Renaissance Fine At and Design Gallery in Carmel, Indiana. Kathleen's description of her art is below"

'Birdyboo: A pique assiette work made with vintage bits of china, stained glass, rhinestones and victorian findings. The artist loves to use found items that possess a beauty all their own, creating a new life for bits and pieces that might otherwise be lost to time.  Birdyboo is a piece from a collection that honors re-birth of the creative spirit and what that can mean to individual artistic expression'.

To make a bid on the silent auction contact Eric Hillenbrand at the 20 North Gallery in Toledo, Ohio....Eric will advise what the last bid was....This is for a great cause... the phone number is 419 241 2400

Natures Vision

Toledo Mud Hens BaseballStadium
'Natures Vision" is a photographic expo being put together by a few friends I met two years ago in Iceland. The dates are November 11, 12 and 13 at the Hylton Center for the Performing Arts on the Prince William capmpus of George Mason University. The keynote speaker is renowned photographer Art Wolfe.

I am reprinting the note I received with a link to the event....Sounds like a fun event that should not be missed.

Here are the particulars..

This year the event is held on November 11th through the 13th. This is the premier nature photography event in the Mid-Atlantic region  We are celebrating our 10th year and we are a nonprofit all volunteer organization that was formed by 6 camera clubs in Northern Virginia.

Each year we feature a juried photography exhibit with approximately 300 images displayed,  lectures from renowned photographers from across the United States, and an exhibit hall with over 25 photography vendors.  We were originally known as the Meadowlark Nature Photography  Expo.  We outgrew the facilities at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and have since moved to the Hylton Center for the Performing Arts on the Prince William (Manassas) campus of George Mason University.

We are very excited to host renowned photographer Art Wolfe as the Keynote Speaker.   In addition to Art Wolfe,  we are pleased to have Charles Needle, Arthur Ransome, Ellen Anon, Lynda Richardson, Kevin Adams, Denise Ippolito, and Joseph Rossbach as presenters.  We will also host workshops on Macro Photography, Photoshop, iPhone Photography, and Flash Photography.

Our event caters to all levels of photography, beginner to advanced.

Wiscasset, Maine

Orignal Image

This image above was one of the first ones I printed several years back. Decided to re-process today and see what it looked like taking out many of the artifacts and smoothing it out a bit. Part of the work was done in Touch and the rest was done using content aware in Photoshop....

The image below is the redoux from this morning.

And just for some fun I made a lab conversion to Black and White and used a color fill layer to change the tone...
Toned BW, LAB Conversion

I find it very rewarding to go back occasionally with the new information we have learned and re-process older images - great fun to see what one can accomplish with a few new tools....just saying you know....

I am working to get my images back on the blog after the user error that occurred. It is a long and tedious job. I am giving some thought to a newsletter once a week - stay tuned to this space for more news.

PSColorHD

This application is low resolution but so much fun...give it a try...This was a vintage automobile photographed in Indianapolis a few weeks back...
