Ferris Wheel, Burka

Convergence, iPhone5
As we are driving around Dubai I notice this Ferris Wheel which has the Burj Khalifa (178 story building) in the background. I am thinking this makes a great juxtaposition for an image...we pull over and of course it is virtually impossible to get them both in the shot being so close to the Ferris Wheel. I decide to just make an iPhone image of the wheel when along comes a woman in a colorful Burka....I got the shot although not what I originally stopped for...

Dubai at Night

Dubai Sunset
On my last day in Dubai my buddy Alex took me up to the 84th floor of a new building his company was working on. The image above is an iPhone5 image taken just prior to sunset.....You can barely make out the Burj Khalifa (178 floors) off in the distance.

The Creek, Dubai

Ancient Dhows, The Creek, Dubai
Late this afternoon (Tuesday) I found myself in a tall garage overlooking The Creek which is a small river that runs through the city of Dubai. The ancient boats known as dhows below come in from Iran and Mumbai bringing goods into the city.  The dhows, were docked next to the Spice Souk (Market) which is strewn with hemp bags opened showing the various spices for sale. It is quite fascinating the way this city can be so cosmopolitan and yet retain ties to the old world.

I ran out of time and was not able to make any images in the market so that will have to wait until next time....

Here is a link to info on the Dhow.....http://www.thenational.ae/guide/historical/the-making-of-a-nation/dhows/

Christmas 2012.......

Something to Remember this Christmas......
Carousel, Maine
'So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
War is over over
If you want it
War is over
Now'...John Lennon

Carriage and Flag, Seymour, Indiana

iPhone Image, Seymour, Indiana
On the way to French Lick, Indiana last week I stopped to make a few images with Eric DiBlasi in Seymour, Indiana. I had seen an image he had made of an old barn and wanted to check it out.Being a fan of Americana specifically the American Flag I was happy to see one on the barn. Found an old carriage upstairs - must have been circa 1950 - and carried it down to it's place in today's image....someone said it was a bit scary......not sure....

French Lick, Two Trees

Sunrise, French Lick, Indiana
Having just had eye surgery I find that I can see the screen on my iP5 much better - something that has not been great for quite some time. Turns out I had a cataract in my left eye (the dominant one) and they needed to replace the lens...and now my vision is 20-20 - no more glasses - have to love modern technology.

And speaking of modern technology the iPhone is a perfect tool to re-create older more traditional photography -  such as the work of Edward Steichen where he mixed platinum and color as in the famous image of the Flatiron Building in New York.

This image today is the first in my exploration of re-creating these older images using the iPhone and iPad.....also a bit of Photoshop involved.....

Here is a link to some gum over platinum prints - http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7114251914438294276#editor/target=post;postID=4844196365450493793

Waiting for Coffee....
Seems like the coffee shop in Bloomington, Indiana opens an hour later on Sunday. I was sitting in my car when I noticed what I thought was a perfect composition of daily life.......Made this image with Pro645, Dynamic Light Orton blended back with the original in Blender - then a bit of Nik Snapseed and finished it off in Photoshop for local changes and sharpening.....

Music,. iPad and the Olympus OM-D

Best Buy Theater - NY City
Thanks to Dan Burkholder I purchased the Olympus OM-D 4/3rd's camera....I am enjoying using this lightweight camera to shoot music and then processing on the iPad and desktop Mac.

This image was made in New York City on October 14, 2012 at the Best Buy Theater........

Cara

Cara, iPhone4s
Portraits are fun using the Hipstamatic Camera application. I tend to use one film and lens combo with Hipsta - JohnS and KodotGrizzled. I like the way they render the skin tone, and, specifically like the the look if the image in a flat front light. For me that is just the beginning....I usually play with softness, structure and color trying to make the eyes draw the viewer into the image. This can be accomplished using Snapseed, Filterstorm and blender....

The Road and the Sky

Barns, iPhone4s, Kane, Pennsylvania
Drove back home from Toledo today...Actually left Saturday and stopped in Erie, PA where I stayed at the fabulous Holiday Inn Express - got the last room - remind me not to travel on Saturday night next time.Woke up very early Sunday and out the door by 6:30AM - drove route 6 from Erie to New York State looking for color....seemed like I was maybe a week early but did manage to find a few images to make, both with my iPhone and big boy camera.......The big boy image of this barn will be posted on http://HSandler.blogspot.com later today....

Toledo was a great time as always - got to re-unite with the Donuts and and the Donut ho's......a way inside joke. Eric Hillenbrand and Condessa Croninger were fabulous hosts at 20 North Gallery - and we surpassed last year in money raised at the opening.

But the best time was spent at The Toledo School for the Arts and St. Ursula's Academy. I was able to speak with art students from 8th grade through high school - and was totally impressed with these artists and the work they were doing. Who knew Toledo was so rich in the arts....never entered MY mind.  Definitely a must to re-visit next time through Toledo.

Here are a couple of links my friend Teri Lou Dantzler sent me today - thought I wold share them with everyone...Teri's blog is a great source of iPhone information.

Cross Processing

Singapore Rock Show
The image posted today was made using the Olympus OM-D 4/3 camera and processed using the iPad. With the OM-D one is able to shoot raw and JPEG simultaneously, and, tirelessly transfer both to the IOS device of your choice for processing. It is nice to have slightly more resolution without the weight of a more traditional camera.....

Bal,Fishing Boat

Fishing Boat, Bali
Every day at 3AM these small boats go fishing out in the Indian Ocean. off the coast of eastern Bali. These are very small boats in a very big ocean....

I was out as sunrise this particular morning but did manage to catch one boat coming in a bit early....Actually got to watch them pull the boat up the rocky coast onto dry land.....

This image was made using the Olympus 4/3 OM-D and process on the iPad and CS6.

Bali, Day 1

Bali - Day One, iPhone4s
This image was made the first day in Bali - the scene was just behind my hotel room the day I arrived. Thought it looked a bit like an elephant with a bell hanging from it's trunk......I also see faces around the lower part of the trunk - the one that stands out the most is on the right side,,,,sort of a rocker with a pompadour... also a Lion or some sort of cat on the left side.......

Apple iPad and Olympus OM-D

The Palouse, 4/3 OM-D image
This is another image form the workshop in the Palouse. The image was made using the OM-d 4/3 Camera and then processed on the iPad and laptop. The original sky was completely blue so I added a few layers of clouds using weather FX and Photo Wizard. Finished it all off using NIK CFX4 on my laptop. Adding clouds using Weather FX works out well but you might need to add a bit of grunge.

First off the landscape is wonderful but he real draw are the hot dog s you can buy at the petrol station about 300 yards behind where this image was made.....watch out Nathan's... At any rate I am off on an adventure in Asia - Hong Kong - Bali and Singapore. Part work and part photography.......Stay tuned for some new images.....

Olympus OM-D and iPad

As mentioned in this blog before my friend Dan Burkholder turned me on to the Olympus micro 4/3 mirror-less camera a few weeks back. I ordered it immediately from Amazon and have not put it down since receiving the UPS package. One of the selling points for me was the wireless transfer of images direct from the camera to my iPad for processing(using an eye-fi card).

Today's image from the Last Pixel Show Workshop in The Palouse was made using the O;Olympus )M-D and processed on my iPad. THe apps used were FXPhotoStudio, Snapseed, Dramatic Black and White and Filterstorm. I also added the clouds to a blank sky using Photo Wizard.NIK Color EFX4 was used to make a few global adjustments before posting.

Lone Mangrove Tree, Everglades

This image is from a trip to the Everglades a few years ago. On this day we took a boat out to the Mangroves, got in the water and made images for about two hours. The one thing we were told was to shuffle our feet to not step on the sting rays....apparently they are only bothered if you step right on them,.....NICE!

This was a big boy camera image processed on the iPad using Filterstorm, blender and Moku Hanga......

Red Church, Iceland

Iceland CHurch
Today's image started as a DSLR photo which was photo-synched over to my iPad2 for processing. Snapseed and Blender were used and then the image was synched back to my desktop where I added a texture and sharpening.

I like creating what I call the anti-postcard image.......The original image is below and was made through a bus window on a rainy day, hence the soft fog look....

Wind Farm

Wind Farm near Walla Walla
Passed this scene on the way to Portland, Oregon when leaving the Palouse. Image was made using the Olympus OM-D 4/3 mirror less camera my friend Dan Burkholder made me aware of. I  continue to marvel at the ease which my eye-fi card downloads my images directly to the iPad with no wires attached. Additionally the images come into the iPad at 16MP.

This image was created using snapseed, blender, FXPhotoStudio and Moka Hanga

Lone Tree, The Palouse

Lone Tree, The Palouse
The Last Pixel Show Workshop in The Palouse ended on Sunday. Met some new friends and re-visited with some old friends. There were participants from all parts of the country and everyone brought something new to the table - seems like there is always new to learn about iPhone/iPad digital art.

We made images of o0ld cars, tractors, trucks, combines, wheat, lentils, and, of course, Lone Tree's....Seems like everyone has a special Lone Tree.......

On that note I processed my own version of The Lone Tree above...Used 645Pro, Snapseed, blender and foolproof.....Foolproof is a low res app but neat look for blending back into an original..

Koi Pond, The Palouse

Koi Pond, iPhone4s
The Last Pixel Show workshop finished last night - and what a week it was - great light - great participants - and, of course lots of iPhone chatter. Thanks to everyoje who drove and flew a long way to be part of this workshop. Someone once told me ;if you want to learn something - teach it', and that is very true.

Today's image was made using a new camerta application 645 Pto (look for more info in the next few days) and processed using Blender, Filterstorm, Moka Hanga, and another new application, Foolproof.

Foolproof i a fun (low res) painting application and feels more like finger painting then brushing. Make a really good layer to use for blending and so far I am liking this one.

Look for more on both of these applications in the next few days as today is a travel day. Going through the Columbia Gorge with my friend and co-workshop organizer,m Teri Lou Dantzler.

The Palouse, Rad's Farm

Combine, Rod's Hubner's Farm
Yesterday afternoon The Last Pixel Show workshop made images aat Rod Hubner's farm, between Oakdaleand Colfax, Washington. And what an afternoon it was - everything from Matty the dog, to getting a ride in a combine that was out in the field harvesting the wheat. There were dust shots of the combines moving through the fields cutting the wheat and then coming in to dump their loads into a waiting truck.

We were there until almost sunset. At one point, off om the horizon there was a red circular light ashing down from the clouds

The Palouse - Day 1

Wheat Harvest, Palouse
Everyone  arrived tin Colfax today for our Last Pixel Show iPhone Workshop. We all met at 6PM and went out for a quick dinner before getting together in the conference room so Teri Lou and I could review a few cameras as we are going out for sunrise tomorrow. Great group, mostly from the west coast but there is one from Texas and another from Montana, 11 women and two men.

Tomorrow the call is at 530AM so cutting this note short tonight.

The farmers in this area are in the middle of harvest - therefore I am sharing an image that this New Yorker does not see everyday.....i used my Olympus OM-D and an eye-fi card. The eye-fi card facilitated the images being tirelessly transferred to my iPad for processing.

Telluride - Alta Mining Camp

Alta Camp - Telluride, Colorado, iPhone4s
This image is one of the many old mining camps located in the Telluride area. Slowly they are restoring these camps to their original condition. This building is where the miners slept after putting in 16 hour days. They worked in shifts as there were only space for 8 miners to sleep at one time. I was told that the gold mined each day was worth one million dollars.

From a photograph point of view these are wonderful places to make images - but only if you can make it at 10,000 feet - and it is tough....

At times I will draw inspiration from my favorite artists when working on an iPhone/iPad image.

Today's image was made using my DSLR and imported into my iPad for processing. I was looking for the background to mimic James Ensor's 'Christ's Entry into Brussels'. I always liked his presentation of the crowd in that painting....gave a sense of depth to the image.

Ferris Wheel

Ferris Wheel - Atlantic City
How many times have you worked on an image for a few days and the minute you post on a social network page or blog or other media a thought enters your mind with a new processing idea - countless times for me. That and going back in the archives and wondering how you missed an image in the first place...something I suggest everyone do from time to time...

The Ferris Wheel image today fits both of these criteria. It has been in the archives for quite some time - very much overexposed but with bit and pieces of color. After working on the image for several days it dawns on me to make a composite using one of my cloud images. PS: it is always helpful to save clouds and texture images in a folder for just this purpose.
Original Ferris Wheel
So after an hour or so I think I have it right, hit return and send it off into the cyber world. Needless to say that second I did that I realize it was the color that drew me into the image in the first place, and, of course, now have to go back and mask in the color...

Portrait Processing

Harry Chapin at Home
I talk a good deal about moving images from my iPhone over to the big boy computer for processing. Well it works both ways. One of my favorite things to do is scan old film images and move them on to the iPad for processing. It opens so many options and possibilities for being creative with your images.

In my archives I have a number of film images, both black and white and color,  from my days in the music business.  Over the last year I have been scanning these images into the digital world and experimenting with processing on my iPad.

Today's image is Harry Chapin, am image made for a music magazine, circa mid seventies.
