Caifornia Coast, iPhone4

California Coast, iPhone4
'I am poor and naked but I am the chief of a nation. We do not want riches but we do want to train our children right. Riches would do us no good. We could not take them with us to the other world. We do not want riches. We want peace and love'......Red Cloud, Oglala Sioux Chief

Yosemite Falls

Yosemite Falls
'I must return to the mountains - to Yosemite. I am told that the winter storms there will be easily borne, but I am bewitched, enchanted, and tomorrow I must start for the great temple to listen to the winter songs and sermons preached and sung only there'.........from a letter written by John Muir in 1869

Artistic Block

Fonthill - Bucks County
For the past 6 or 7 weeks I have been in a creative dark hole - nothing seemed to interest me....Maybe it was that I was back in my old touring world working on a one time project to make some money to support my image addiction toys....Yup just maybe that was it....takes one's head back to the left side of the brain....

The cure - A ROAD TRIP...... First stop was Seattle where I met old friends - facebook friends - Teri Lou Dantzler, Scooter Lowrimore and Charles 'Dick' Maclauchlan. I have known Dick and Scooter only on FB for the last year....have watched their images pass my screen but had never met them until a few days ago.  We broke some bread and had a great time shooting - both in Seattle and up in Olympic National Park.
Fonthill Original.....
I decided the cure for getting my head back into my iPhone work was to re-process older images using the new technology for the iPhone. Today's image is from last year at Fonthill in Bucks County......a 28 image Autostitch panoramic processed in Photo Studio, Perfect Photo, Snapseed and Filterstorm. I started right from the beginning of the process by re-doing the Autostitch....

Teri Lou Dantzler and I are teaching an iPhone creativity class on Whidbey Island starting on Friday at 1PM....there are still a few places open.....here is the link to The Pacific Northwest Art School...

Carnaby Street

'All you need is Love'.......

This image from late 2008 when I first started with the iPhone. We were out walking in London and ended up on Carnaby Street....This has always been one of my favorite early images from the early iPhone days. This was, in all likelihood, an hdr application and Photo Forge. Photo Forge was the early leader in processing applications.

I did a bit of re-processing in Filterstorm this morning....

These two images are an example of local image management to call attention to a particular part of the frame. In this case the 'LOVE' balloon on the top image was lightened, added contrast and sharpened to pop the balloon out from the buildings. Additionally the background was slightly darkened with slightly increased contrast...Quite simple and effective way to manage your image whether it be the iPhone or a more traditional camera.

Technique

Church of Ireland -New Technique - iPhone4
Technique: The way in which the fundamentals, as of an artistic work, are handled.

As you learn new image management techniques, go back into the archives and re-process older images. While I do this on a regular basis (both big boy camera and iPhone images) the re-processing of older images is worth the time and effort, not to mention a worthwhile learning experience. Even the most subtle change, as in the image posted today, can be significant. . I would advise giving this exercise some time in your daily work-flow - even if just one image a week...

The image today was simply given a new sharpening and contrast technique I picked up over the past few weeks...subtle as mentioned but works for me....

Did I mention that an iPhone or iPad is the perfect tool  - Filterstorm works well for this type of exercise.

Marina Morning

Marina Morning, iPhone4
Sometimes simplicity is all that is necessary. I read somewhere the if it ain't grungy it is not happening...I totally disagree...so many ways to tell a story and pass on the sense of place when you clicked the shutter - or in this case tapped the screen - so many tools at our beck and call - not necessarily to be used on every image....enough said..

Death Valley

Mesquite Dunes - Death Valley
Working on several iPhone impressions of Death Valley and other locations...these iPhone images work well as color-scape impressions when printed small on the right substrate....my intent would be to hae several of these impressions in my upcoming show at the Renaissance Fine Art and Design Gallery in Carmel, Indiana. .

Zion National park

Zion National Park, iPhone 3Gs
'There is nothing so American as our National Parks.....The fundamental idea behind the parks...is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us'.......President Franklin D. Roosevelt

Death Valley

Death Valley, Mesquite Dunes
In one of the workshops I attended over the past few years the leader had mentioned making sketches of ideas either on pieces of paper or in some sort of day book. What I realized this morning (and I may have already been aware) is that the iPhone is particularly suited for this - a virtual visual diary of ideas. For me, I get to work out ways to post process with the bonus of getting to think about new ideas for making the actual photograph in the field....whether it be big boy camera or iPhone.

Ireland

Ireland Seascape, iPhone4 Image
All I can remember about this image was trying to keep my balance as the drop was maybe 150 feet and I was set-up very close to the edge....The coastline of Ireland is a great photo opp at every turn....I guess I could say that about all of Ireland.....
