Olloclip Lens

When I returned home from Iceland my Olloclip lens was waiting. For those not aware of this product it is a quick connect lens solution that includes a fisheye, wide-angle and macro lens on one attachment...Clink here for more information: olloclip.com.

Yesterday I gave the macro lens a test run and was not dis-appointed. I was using the lens hand-held which added some movement issues (better on a tripod but probably more cumbersome) and after a few attempts I started getting the hang of it....Need to get into the wide-angle and fisheye but on first blush I do like the macro lens....It clips on quickly but one would need to take off any external attachments such as battery chargers or skin cases.

Additionally, I was very impressed with the level of detail this lens is able to capture...

Today's image is my first attempt at macro photography with my iPhone and Olloclip..so far I like it.....

Iceland - Jokulsarion Glacier

Iceland - Jokulsarion Glacier
Jokulsarion is the largest glacier lagoon/lake in Iceland. It is in the southeast between Skaftafell and the town of Hofn.

ON my first visit to this glacier last year the water was fairly still with little or no movement in the ice sculptures (i like to call them sculptures because of the  natural shapes they take on). This time the water was moving fairly quickly so the 'sculptures' occasionally collided and broke into smaller pieces. These pieces then floated out to the ocean and were washed up on the black beach (images of this in another blog). Good news is when you finish making images at the glacier the black beach is just about 500 yards away - so one can go photograph the pieces as they wash up on the shore...will be posting black beach images later int he week..

Overall Iceland is a continual visual treat whether it be farmland, waterfalls, churches, glaciers or beaches. So many images in a place the size of Kentucky.....

Iceland - Small Cottage

Iceland, Svinafell, Cottage
This image was made in or near Svinafell, Iceland during the drive back to Reykjavik last Friday. Simply could not resist this small cottage which I was told was a summer home....Love the face just under the peak of the roof.

According to an online source Svinafell, during the early settlements of Iceland, was considered a place of great nobility...apparently Svinafell has been around since the 9th or 10th century - located near the Oraefajokull Glacier, one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland....

For applications used see labels below....additionally I used blender to add two textures to this image.

Iceland - Day 1

ON the Road to Budir
Finally got away from Reykjavik yesterday and drove to the town of Budir in the northwest corner of Iceland...All I can say is wow....total overcast and fog the entire way - my favorite light.....moutain peaks cover in fog - saturated colors....photographers dream....The only drawback was a bit cold and windy....but simply does not matter....Woke up this morning and got out around 530AM....did I mention the sunrise is at 4AM and the sun set around midnight...basically it never really gets dark - there is always a soft glow in the northern sky....

Traveling with Einar Erlendsson fromborgarfjordur moiuntain - West Icelandhttp://www.focusonnature.is/ makes everything really simple to deal with...Einar runs workshops every summer in Iceland with various professional instructors. Last Saturday I gave a one day seminar on the iPhone in Reykjavik and will be going back next year for another....

Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier, California
Posting two images every day on two separate blogs has been very educational. I have learned so much over the past 18 months - many new ways to manage an image and applying the new skill across many many platforms...

Today is one of those transitional images for me - I have processed the Santa Monica Pier (one of my all time favorites) several ways but today is a more slightly grungy saturated version. Can't wait to see where this work-flow will lead...after all as my friend Teri Lou Dantzler always says......play play play....

Perception

Still Life, Christiania, Copenhagen
There are several ways to take a viewer through an image, be it a high resolution image from a traditional camera or an image made using an alternative camera such as the iPhone. This morning I applied what I call a light-dark technique to the image posted today. I learned this in several workshops taken over the past few years with Dan Burkholder and John Paul Caponigro. Basically it is using light and painting light and dark areas to create a path for the viewer to see the image, and, to highlight what John Paul calls the 'main actor in the play'. There are several other platforms to make this move but for today I concentrated on the light-dark using the application Filterstorm.

One way is to simply adjust the luminance in Filterstorm and 'apply with mask', meaning you paint in the light and dark areas using a brush with varying opacity and size. Another way is to make separate light and dark images to taste and then use the 'add exposure' dialog in Filterstorm to add the images then selectively paint in light or dark to taste using the brushes and opacity dialog. One can also selectively paint in texture using this same technique. And yes, there are other ways to make this move and whatever works for you is the right answer....

Of course this is not for every image but most definitely worth taking some time to explore what is can do for your images.

Boats - Christiania

Boats, Christiania, Copenhagen

I came across these two boats while walking Christiania yesterday. Would have posted them earlier today but the blogspot was not uploading properly...

I have been trying to achieve sort of a cloisonne look with water - getting closer I think but not quite there.

Christiania

Yesterday was my first day in Copenhagen. Met a friend, Claus, and he showed my the center of Copenhagen. I have been here before but always passing through so never really got the opportunity to truly see the city.

One of our stops was Christiania which is an autonomous neighborhood of 850 residents on 85 acres in the center of the city. Basically this place reminds me of San Francisco in the mid-60's and the authoirites in Copenhagen regard it a a very large commune.

The photograph above is the son of one of the inhabitants of Christiania that Claus knew. I was completely taken by his eyes - possibly the poster child for this area.... It is a straight Hipstamatic image with some local corrections made in Filterstorm. Lately I have been totally immersed in portrait work using the Hipsta application.

I am going back to make more images over the next few days and will post as many as possible.

The info below is from Wikipedia:

Also known as Freetown the area consists of former military barracks and parts of the city ramparts. The National Heritage Agency has protected many of the ancietn buildings, some go back as far as 1617.  Best I can tel is that in 1971 fences were torn down and the settlers took over the old compound to use as a payground for their children.

A journalist, Jacob Ludvigsen wrote in 1971:

Christiania is the land of the settlers. It is, so far, the biggest opportunity to buidl up a society from scratch while using the remaining constructions. They have their own electricity, a bath house, a giant athletics building where all seekers of peace could have their grand meditation and yoga center. Buldings for the stoners who are too paranoid and weak to aprticipate in the race...Yes for those who feel the beating of the pioneer heart there can be no doubt as to the purpose of Christiania. It is part of the city which has been kept secret to us - but no more.

The people of Christiania have developed their own set of rules, independent of the Danish Government. The rules forbid stealing, violence, knives, bulletproof vests, hard drugs and biker colors.

The main drag, known as Pusher Dtreet, where hash and skunk weed are sold openly in stands since 2004. The has commerce is controversial, but since the rules require a consnsus they cannot be removed unless everyone agrees. Legalizing cannabis is one of the ideas of many of the citizens of Christiania. This accord was reached with the Danish Government defense ministry (who still own the land) in 1995.

There is more information online at Wikipedia....Very interesting area...had I not seen it with my own eyes it might be difficult to understand hwo a culture like this can still exist in this day and age...but then again why not.....

Scottish Sheep

So last night I asked my friend and top iPhoneographer Teri Lou Dantzler to give me the haiku demo of the new NIK Application, Snapseed.. Not being a fan of u-point technology in the past, and still not really liking that technology, I was apprehensive about diving into Snapseed. In the end I came out of the tutorial  really liking Snapseed, particularly the framing dialog. Having control of size and width in a framing dialog is huge, at least the way I see it. The only thing missing is the ability to save a preset...maybe in the next iteration...presets are always important when you have multiple choices for image management.

Needless to say I have added Snapseed to the work-flow and will also add to future iPhone workshops.....

Today's image captured in Scotland using:

PS: Be wary of Auto Painter II - it downsizes your image - hopefully they will change that in a future upgrade.
